Thank you

I wanted to thank you on my behalf, and on the behalf of all the other users for hosting the Victoria 2 Wiki and for improving it ! By the way I wanted to know what changes has brought the references function to stop working properly, as in the case of lengthy article such as Victoria II --Niptium (talk) 00:45, 17 April 2013 (CEST)

Didn't have the extension for it installed as I never needed it on the other wikis. It is installed on this wiki now. ~ Meneth (talk) 07:47, 17 April 2013 (CEST)

Hi Meneth,
I asked Niptium to include a spoiler so that large codes can be hiden or shown, but he (AFAIK Niptium is male) said he couldn't add it.
I a spoiler here, but I have no idea how to add it.
Niptium told me to ask you, so can you add a spoiler template?
Greetings General WVPM (talk) 13:31, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

You could use some simple HTML:

Spoiler text.
Edit: It would also be possible to make a template out of that, of course, if need be.
~ Meneth (talk) 19:16, 17 April 2013 (CEST)
Ah thanks I didn't know that existed. General WVPM (talk) 18:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Importing pages

I know a lot of Vicky2Wiki pages are a bit of a mess, and I figured an official notice would be useful for pages that were copied en masse. My idea was that the notice would be in place until an editor took the time to review the page, and either deemed it proper or replaced the import notice with the relevant clean-up templates. Basically, the template's not supposed to mean "this page has an issue" but rather "please review whether this page has an issue, which it might because it was copied from elsewhere". Kimberly (talk) 16:25, 21 April 2013 (CEST)

Well, the issue is there's not real way to apply it automatically, so it'd have to be done on a case by case basis anyway. So using Cleanup/Rewrite makes more sense.
Later today I will most likely be importing all pages from the Paradoxian wiki. Some of these might need updates, but most of them should be fine. Almost all of them will be automatically marked as obsolete as well, since they're not updated for HoD. So there should be plenty of things indicating they need an update. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:28, 21 April 2013 (CEST)
Alright, fair enough. :) Speaking of improving the pages, we need to give the category system some serious thought. Everything is basically in "Reference" and "Strategy" now, which isn't a very helpful categorization. Additionally, some of the categories need renaming (do we have a bot for that?) to conform with Victoria 2 Wiki:Style or simply to have somewhat more elegant titles. Kimberly (talk) 16:34, 21 April 2013 (CEST)
Yeah, the categories definitely need to be diversified. I think the strategy categories are fine though, as there aren't that many pages in there.
As to renaming categories I can probably install an extension that'll do that. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:38, 21 April 2013 (CEST)

Requested move

I'm trying to move "Country Guides" (uppercase G) to "Country guides" (lowercase G) in accordance with the style guidelines. However, "country guides" already exists. For the sake of preserving proper edit history, could you please delete "Country guides" (which is just a redirect) and then move Country Guides to there? Kimberly (talk) 22:18, 21 April 2013 (CEST)

Done. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:19, 21 April 2013 (CEST)

Removing redirects

It's usually not necessary to remove redirects, as long as the actual article is at the correct title. For example, a couple of articles link to casus belli, and deleting that redirect broke those links. There's a saying on Wikipedia: redirects are cheap. The whole idea of redirects is to make sure people searching for the wrong thing get pointed at the right article. Kimberly (talk) 01:43, 22 April 2013 (CEST)

Might as well remove them, as the search engine is powerful enough to fix capitalization. Not that many cases of improperly named redirects anyway. ~ Meneth (talk) 01:44, 22 April 2013 (CEST)
The search engine may correct searches, but intrawiki links do get broken if they're not capitalized right. Kimberly (talk) 01:46, 22 April 2013 (CEST)
I know. That only affects a few pages though, which I'll fix once I'm done with the full list of pages (getting near the end now). ~ Meneth (talk) 01:48, 22 April 2013 (CEST)
Okay, might've been a bit overzealous, but I think I've gotten rid of all the redlinks I created now. ~ Meneth (talk) 02:18, 22 April 2013 (CEST)

For some reason when I click links, a lot of the time it will start a download. Then I need to reclick the link to get there. For example, right now I have User_talk-Meneth.gz downloaded because I clicked to get on this page. Do you know what's up?Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:41, 22 April 2013 (CEST)

If you're using Chrome, try clearing your cache. From what Google tells me the issue has something to do with how Chrome does caching. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:44, 23 April 2013 (CEST)

Country guides

Hey Meneth, I was curious as to what you'd think about splitting countries into articles about countries and strategy guides for those countries. For example, we could have an article on the United States that contained information about all of the states the US starts with and what their provinces are. If the RGO's don't change those could be listed too. It could also contain all of the decisions that can be made by the US. Then a second article could be created that is a strategy guide for playing with the United States. Most of the country guide articles combine information about the country with strategy on how to play with the country. If we did do that, I'm not sure whether or not it is something we should do now, or something that we should wait until the Wiki is a bit more complete first. Ryan Vesey 03:59, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

Most country pages are so short I'm not sure there's much need for that. If there's need for it in the future we can do it then easily enough. ~ Meneth (talk) 09:24, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

Hi ! What has happened to the Flavicon.ico file ? It's not there anymore ?--Niptium (talk) 06:32, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

The favicon.ico file is stored directly on the server, at ~ Meneth (talk) 09:23, 24 April 2013 (CEST)
Well, I don't know why, but for me, the Favicon disapeared. It is no longer showing in the address bar and I was guessing it was that way since the File:Favicon.ico was no longer there. Am I mistaken ?--Niptium (talk) 13:25, 24 April 2013 (CEST)
Yeah, the File:favicon.ico shouldn't be relevant as a favicon is generally hosted directly in the top-level folder of a website. It can take some time to propagate at times though; in Firefox it usually takes longer to show up than in Chrome for example. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:32, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

Email notifying

Shouldn't we be notified by email when a user modifies our User:Talk page ? --Niptium (talk) 20:04, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

Currently the only email that is sent is account confirmation. I'll see if I can enable more than that. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:07, 24 April 2013 (CEST)
There, you can now configure it to email you whenever your talk page is edited, and when something on your watchlist is edited. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:12, 24 April 2013 (CEST)

Have you considered asking official permission for using game images, screenshots, etc. from Paradox? I think our usage would probably be considered fair use, and I doubt Paradox minds, but it's always nice to have permission in writing. Specifically, we would want: "a non-exclusive, international, royalty-free, revocable, non-transferable license for editors of the wiki network currently containing the Victoria 2 Wiki, Europa Universalis 4 Wiki and Crusader Kings II Wiki to store, display, copy, distribute, and prepare derivative works of text, image and sound files from games by Paradox Development Studio for the sole purpose of providing educative and descriptive information on these games or to illustrate such information." Subject, of course, to whatever limitation they want to specify. Kimberly (talk) 17:14, 27 April 2013 (CEST)

I suppose it migt be a decent idea to attain something like that. The main issue is that I have no idea who to contact about something like that. ~ Meneth (talk) 17:18, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
The website lists as a contact e-mail for Paradox Development Studio. (And otherwise they'll point us to whomever we should contact, I imagine.) I can do it for you, if you like--though on a related note, have you considered giving the wiki network a name? Kimberly (talk) 17:24, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
Since I own the wikis it would probably be best if I did it.
I've considered setting up a frontpage for the network like Paradoxian has got, and I'll probably do so once I further expand the network. I haven't really had any ideas for what to call it, beyond perhaps "Paradox Wikis". ~ Meneth (talk) 17:26, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
Does something like this sound fine?
Good afternoon,
I send you this email to ask for permission to use materials related to Paradox Development Studio games on my wikis. For near a year now I've operated the Crusader Kings II Wiki, and recently I expanded and set up Victoria 2 and Europa Universalis 4 wikis. While I'm reasonably sure this is covered by fair use law, I thought it would be best to ask for permission in writing now that I'm likely to expand the wiki network to further Paradox games.
Specifically, I'm asking for "a non-exclusive, international, royalty-free, revocable, non-transferable license for editors of the wiki network currently containing the Victoria 2 Wiki, Europa Universalis 4 Wiki and Crusader Kings II Wiki to store, display, copy, distribute, and prepare derivative works of text, image and sound files from games by Paradox Development Studio for the sole purpose of providing educative and descriptive information on these games or to illustrate such information."
If there are any limitations you would wish to add to this, that is of course fine.
Thank you for your time,
~ <signature>
That sounds great. You may want to add that you're Meneth on the forums, though. Kimberly (talk) 17:46, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
The from field will show Meneth, while the signature would be my full name. ~ Meneth (talk) 17:51, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
Any final edits I should make before sending it? ~ Meneth (talk) 19:04, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
I suppose it might be a good idea to change " store, display, copy, distribute and prepare derivative works of..." to read " store, publicly display, copy, distribute, publicly perform and prepare derivative works of..." And you might make change "...text, image and sound files from games..." to "...text, images and sounds, including from game files, from games..." for the sake of completeness. If you've already sent it, no great harm. Kimberly (talk) 19:23, 27 April 2013 (CEST)
Sent it now with those modifications. Also changed "good afternoon" to "good evening" since it is now evening in CEST. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:25, 27 April 2013 (CEST)

Vicky imports

I think that should be all of them! Want me to sort through the imported files, too, or put those in a separate category? Kimberly (talk) 02:15, 28 April 2013 (CEST)

Might as well stick the few of those where copyright is ambiguous in the same category. ~ Meneth (talk) 02:16, 28 April 2013 (CEST)

And don't worry, I won't break anything. :) I've been an admin on other wikis. Kimberly (talk) 02:37, 28 April 2013 (CEST)

That's what I assumed, since you've obviously got experience with wiki management. Together we should be able to make this wiki great. ~ Meneth (talk) 02:39, 28 April 2013 (CEST)

Is it possible to create them there? I tried but I failed. Navbox for countries (with GP SP civ/unciv groups) would be cool. Notpoop (talk) 18:20, 8 July 2013 (CEST)

Navboxes are doable. I've ported over the navbox template from the CKII Wiki now. ~ Meneth (talk) 18:23, 8 July 2013 (CEST)

Load the game, silly

I wish I could. For some reason I can only start the game with the pop demand mod so i'm only going from the files. Medibee (talk) 16:49, 17 July 2013 (CEST)

Have you tried turning PDM off? The launcher should let you toggle it off. If not, it sounds like you should probably reinstall the game. On a different note, I'd recommend adding the template to existing country pages before creating any new ones, as that takes higher priority. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:50, 17 July 2013 (CEST)
I'm gonna reinstall the game. I made so many templates is because I wanted the
to be all blue. Medibee (talk) 16:53, 17 July 2013 (CEST)

"Ownership" of the wiki

I see that on your user page you say that you "own" the wiki. I'm curious about what you mean by that? I notice that you are using the CC license on the wiki, which is what we used on the Paradoxian wiki, but that sort of negates ownership over content. --Musides (talk) 00:01, 2 August 2013 (CEST)

I own the wiki itself, as in the server itself and the domain it is on. The ownership of the content on it varies. Articles in the imports category are still owned by Paradoxian. The rest are owned by Paradox Wikis/me (or more specifically, licensed to Paradox Wikis by each individual editor), and licensed out to anyone who feel like using the content elsewhere under CC BY-NC-SA (BY-SA once there are no content left owned by Paradoxian). ~ Meneth (talk) 00:04, 2 August 2013 (CEST)
A clearer overview: All text content is owned by the individual editors, and licensed to Paradox Wikis either directly, or via Paradoxian. The domain, name, certain art assets, server, and such are owned by me (with some elements licensed from Paradox). The images vary; most are licensed from Paradox while others are public domain and thus not owned by anyone. The wiki itself is owned by me, but the content within it is for the most part licensed to me by its creators. Does that clarify things? ~ Meneth (talk) 00:27, 2 August 2013 (CEST)
I have responded to this on the forum. --Musides (talk) 01:12, 2 August 2013 (CEST)

From Zawarudodio

Should I add a guide for Babylon? Oh and Wallachia is completely done, I did a complete guide for that country.

Sure. More content is great. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:41, 19 August 2013 (CEST)

I need a way to rip the images of the country flags to this wiki, How do I do it?

Just leave the flags as redlinks; someone else will upload them at good resolution eventually. Taking them from the game is a final resort as those flags are at quite low resolution. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:59, 19 August 2013 (CEST)

I need you to see any grammar or any other mistake made in Wallachia

It's passable. I've put a rewrite tag on it, so someone will likely get around to it eventually. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:23, 19 August 2013 (CEST)

Thanks bro, I'm a beginner on this stuff, so I'll be Zulu nation next

So what do we do about the Babylonian flag? It looks horribly blurred from the Babylon country page.

Either find a higher resolution version of it, or live with it. Can't say I see any options beyond that. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:52, 1 July 2014 (CEST)
  • Wow... I mixed up Balkan with Baltics, seriously, what is wrong with me.

Hey, could you delete balfour declaration (uncapitalised) and Enact Dual Monarchy? ~ Zawarudodio 2:13 AM EST

There's no reason to delete redirects unless they're misleading. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:41, 16 August 2014 (CEST)

Alemite Grease Pump, just wow! ~ Zawarudodio 4:36 AM EST

Yeah, spam gets through the CAPTCHAs occasionally. I take care of it rather quickly most of the time though. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:16, 28 August 2014 (CEST)

Translation into Russian

Ok, Thanks for the answer. As I understand it, i can use materials this wiki for translation into russian language. I found russian site with Vicky wiki and he has no info, and I want use your materials. Thank you again for materials about game.

Yep, that's fine as long as the content is attributed to this wiki, and the CC BY-NC-SA license is used. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:07, 20 March 2014 (CET)

The decisions page is a complete failure. What's there is EXTREMELY basic. Half the links (Of four) are redlinks, and the half of the valid ones aren't capitalized correctly. Frankly, we need to reorganize and probably completely overhaul the page.--Prussia (talk) 22:23, 15 August 2014 (CEST)

Feel free. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:41, 15 August 2014 (CEST)

Unit Statistics

I can't find any statistics for military units anywhere, other than in the Army tech page, and that is quite vague. Is that the only location, or is there some sort of mechanic regarding units in-game I'm not aware of?

Each unit type has individual stats making them better or worse at certain things. I think this is visible when hovering over them on the unit construction page. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:41, 15 August 2014 (CEST)

I meant on the wiki itself, though, and I'm trying to find their statistics somewhere on the wiki.--Prussia (talk) 00:32, 16 August 2014 (CEST)

Ah. I don't know, no. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:33, 16 August 2014 (CEST)
Any chance you could email me the files for each country's decisions (If they're all in a large group, I could probably handle that), or do you want me to try to locate all the files I can currently on the wiki and attempt to organize those?--Prussia (talk) 00:51, 16 August 2014 (CEST)
I've sent you an email now. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:54, 16 August 2014 (CEST)

Thanks. I got it and am in the process of reading it over. Any chance you could do the same for the units (Provided they all started in some sort of combined "unit" folder in the game files, as I don't want to cause any unnecessary work for you), so I could start adding them into a single page?--Prussia (talk) 01:36, 16 August 2014 (CEST)

Sent. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:42, 16 August 2014 (CEST)

As part of the inclusions, I'm going to change the "Units" page from redirecting to Warfare, and instead add the statistics there. However, I will add a link directing you to Warfare on the page.

Units - Statistics - You know the sites Land units and Naval units? – Lillebror (talk) 23:49, 18 August 2014 (CEST)

Renaming pages

Is there any way to change the title of a page, such as to edit a capitalization issue?--Prussia (talk) 20:21, 18 August 2014 (CEST)

"Move" under the dropdown menu in the top right. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:57, 18 August 2014 (CEST)

Content Navboxes

I am unable to create any sort of navbox for a specific page. I've looked for any indication on your discussion page (You have one right at the top of this page), along with on the EUIII Wiki, but tot no avail. How am I supposed to add a page-specific navbox for categories?--Prussia (talk) 21:40, 18 August 2014 (CEST)

You mean table of contents? Those are automatically added when there's enough headers (3 or 4, I believe). ~ Meneth (talk) 21:41, 18 August 2014 (CEST)
Would that include the subheaders (For lack of a better term) for a category? In particular, I am trying have one created for the Units page, especially seeing how it's internal engine code-heavy for each unit's section.--Prussia (talk) 21:47, 18 August 2014 (CEST)
Yes, once you add one more header the ToC will show up. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:51, 18 August 2014 (CEST)

Political/Social Reforms

Why is it that we have a social reforms page listing each nation's initial settings for the reforms, yet we don't have one for the (Probably as, or even more important) political reforms? I realize that it is possibly (Not sure exactly) not entirely within the player's control to change the reforms, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't get it's own nation-by-nation list! Is it due to the base reforms being inside each separate country's files or something of that sort?--Prussia (talk) 21:47, 27 August 2014 (CEST)

The answer is, as always, simple: no one has bothered to make such a list. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:48, 27 August 2014 (CEST)

Renaming couple of pages

Hi, so I wanted to rename the pages under Reference guides->Technology. Mainly just to keep it in line with the game manual(and to avoid abbreviations). I would like to rename the Research, Tech schools, Army tech, Navy tech, Commerce tech, Culture tech and Industry tech pages into Technology & Research, Research Administration, Army Technology, Naval Technology, Commerce Technology, Culture Technology and Industrial Technology respectively. --Poppis (talk) 15:06, 1 March 2015 (CET)

Tech --> technology seems perfectly fine to me, so feel free to make those moves. Do note that only the first letter of the title should be capitalized, so it should be "Army technology", not "Army Technology".
Could you describe your reasoning for the other two renames? ~ Meneth (talk) 15:07, 1 March 2015 (CET)
Tech school--> Research Administration simply because the Victoria 2 Manual calls it that.
Research-->Technology & Research because I was planning on reorganizing it into a general page about technology and research which would include an overview of the technology window, summary of the different tech categories and links to the proper tech category pages as well as the research points stuff that is already in it. --Poppis (talk) 15:15, 1 March 2015 (CET)
Everyone seems to call it "tech school" though, so I think that's probably the better name. Research --> Research & technology sounds fine (putting technology first doesn't flow very well).
Research --> Research & technology
Army tech --> Army technology
Navy tech --> Naval technology
Commerce tech --> Commerce technology
Culture tech --> Cultural technology
Industry tech --> Industrial technology
Tech school probably unchanged. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:00, 1 March 2015 (CET)
It might have been called tech school in vic 1 perhaps. Anyways, It's also called Administration in-game. Might be more helpful for new people. And you could still make tech school searches to redirect there. --Poppis (talk) 18:16, 1 March 2015 (CET)
What it is called in-game isn't necessarily all that relevant. When virtually everyone calls it "tech school" rather than "research administration", then "tech school" is the more appropriate name.
Though research administration should definitely redirect. ~ Meneth (talk) 18:18, 1 March 2015 (CET)
Hey, I'd like to make a new page for inventions. Is that ok? --Poppis (talk) 11:26, 10 March 2015 (CET)
Feel free. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:27, 10 March 2015 (CET)

Tables and templates

You've probably noticed I'm trying to create a template for lists of materials like in the tables at Units. Unfortunately I can't get it to work! It seems {{!}}- is always interpreted as | followed by -, so it appears as an extra cell containing just -, rather than as intended |-, meaning a row separator. This works in Wikipedia; any idea why it doesn't work here? Hairy Dude (talk) 16:06, 31 October 2015 (CET)

Seems it was the lack of spacing doing it. Should work now. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:25, 31 October 2015 (CET)
Thanks! Hairy Dude (talk) 13:47, 5 November 2015 (CET)

I get blocked unjustly

All the ones in December are blocks I got by trying to modernize Provinces, by adding flags and states.

I started therefore editing as IP but abuse filter thinks I'm vandalizing the page. Can you either finish the modernization or find a way to avoid abuse filter unjustly blocking me?

~der Hochmeister

My apologies for the false positive blocks. I've updated the filter so it does not happen again (from the same cause at least).
If you were to create an account I could also add you to a usergroup that'd ensure you'd be excluded from that filter entirely. ~ Meneth (talk) 12:33, 31 December 2016 (CET)
I already have an account as User:Flagger but antispam filter blocked it. May you unblock it and my last IP, User:
Thanks, ~der Hochmeister
Done. Again, my apologies for the inconvenience. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:19, 31 December 2016 (CET)

Moving 'Social reforms' 'Social Reforms' (note upper-case).

I clicked a red link to 'Social Reforms' recently and found that you had deleted it because it was a duplicate article. This doesn't seem to necessarily come in conflict with the idea of turning 'Social reforms' into a redirect to 'Social Reforms', but you deleted it and I am picking the name you deleted, so I figured I'd let you know what I did in case there's a problem with this. I'm assuming you didn't think of doing this or didn't notice the case or something and I know that if I don't do it now, I probably won't ever do it. So just let me know if I made some kind of mistake. Salvad (talk) 18:37, 19 September 2017 (CEST)

I've moved Social Reforms to "Social reforms", as is the convention on the wiki. This means that both versions now exist, which should eliminate the red link issue. Thanks for making me aware. ~ Meneth (talk) 18:44, 19 September 2017 (CEST)
